Where Does the Rain Off Your Roof Actually Go?

Here is a number that changes how you look at your yard. A few inches of rain on a typical suburban lot produces close to ten thousand gallons of runoff, by the federal Building America program’s estimate.

Ten thousand gallons. Every good storm, all season long. Every single drop of it has to go somewhere.

For most houses, the somewhere is decided by three unglamorous things. The slope of the ground at the foundation. The gutters and downspouts. And what happens to the water after it leaves the downspout. Get those three right and a wet week is a non-event. Get them wrong and the same week ends with a shop vac.

Start at the foundation and just look. The ground should visibly fall away from the house on every side. Over the years, backfilled soil settles and landscaping projects re-level things. Decorative edging can trap water in a neat little moat against the wall. Any spot where the grade tilts toward the house is a spot where rain gets delivered to your foundation on purpose.

Now follow a downspout. Where does it end? If the answer is a splash block at the wall, the entire roof’s runoff is being concentrated right beside the basement. Extensions that carry water several feet out, onto ground that slopes away, are among the cheapest meaningful upgrades a house can get. Clean the gutters twice a year while you are at it. An overflowing gutter is just a downspout with worse aim, dumping sheets of water exactly where you least want them.

Why care this much about landscaping? Because soil that stays saturated against a foundation is patient. It pushes moisture through concrete block, keeps footings wet, and feeds every crack it finds. Basement water problems that get blamed on the house are often yard problems wearing a disguise. And once water does get in, it rarely announces itself honestly. A basement shows you a puddle while the wet framing and the moisture under the flooring keep quiet. Professional drying exists because the visible water is the smallest part of the problem. Some lots are genuinely flat, or tilt toward the house, and the simple fixes run out. That is what swales and French drains are for. A swale is a shallow, planted channel that intercepts water and gives it a path around the house. A French drain does the same job underground, with perforated pipe in gravel. So this weekend, wait for a decent rain, put on a jacket, and walk the perimeter while it falls. Watch where the water goes.
